A dictionary of Avatar: the Last Airbender characters, places, nations and cultures, weapons, words, puns, nicknames and fan made slang! (Compiled by the members of Blue Spirit Gal's A:TLA Forum)

  • Aang (1) Nation: Air (2) aka "THE AVATAR", male, 12 years old (or technically 112 years old if you add the 100 years Aang was frozen in the iceberg) (3) Aang is a strict vegetarian (4) Name meaning: ("An" according to Chinese name translation means "peace" so Aang my be a variation or part of this name)
  • Aanger (1) slang word for anger involving Aang (either Aang being angry or someone else be angry at Aang)
  • Aang's Glider/Staff (1) a finely tuned instrument designed by the Air Nomada monks to allow an Airbender to use the air currents to fly. (2) When not in use the glider's wings are retracted and concealed into the staff. (3) Aang often uses the staff to bend strong bursts of air at an opponent.
  • Aangst (1) slang word for angst (2) example: When Aaang angsts whether he's injured someone accidentally, lost his bison, or something else bad happens. (3) Can also be used in a broader sense meaning angsting over anything involving Aang, such as "Zuko gets Aangsty over not being able to capture the Avatar"
  • Airbender: (1) an individual of the Air Nomads with the ability to manipulate air currents to form airblasts used for defense or with the use of specialized gliders to fly.(2) Known Airbenders: Aang, Monk Gyatso and the monks of the Air Temples (all dead now)
  • Air Nomads: (1) one of the four Nations within the Avatar world (2) the smallest but most spiritual tribes of the four nations (3) the Air Nomads were hunted down by the Fire Nation and thought to all be extinct except for Aang (the Last Airbender and current Avatar) (4) Known Air Nomads: Aang, Monk Gyatso.
  • Agni Kai: (1) a firebending dual often fought to the death usually over a challenge of dishonor.(2) Prince Zuko received his scar in an angi kai match against his father Firelord Ozai after dishonoring the Firelord by speaking out in the war room.
  • Appa: (1) Nation: Air (2) six legged, ten-ton flying bison with five stomachs with the ability to airbend (3) Aang's creature compaignon
  • Arrow Tattoos (1) Cultural tradition of the Air Nomads which symbolizes an individual to be a Master Airbender. (2) Blue arrow shaped tattos on the top of the head, both arms and legs and going down the back of a master Airbender
  • Aunt Wu (1) Nation: Earth (2) Fortune teller found in the First Season episode "The Fortune Teller"
  • Avatar: (1) the Spirit of the world reincarnated into human form and master of all four bending elements within the Avatar World.  (2) The Avatar is also the bridge between the Real World and Spirit World. (3) The Avatar can be male or female and is re-encarnated in the order of the Avatar Cycle (Water, Earth, Fire & Air)
  • The Avatar Cycle (1) The Avatar repetitive cycle of re-incarnations. The Avatar is reborn into one of the four Nations in the pattern of Water, Earth, Fire and Air. He/she must first master his/her native element then master the remaining three in order to became a fully realized Avatar. Aang, the current Avatar, was born in the cycle of the Air Nomads following Avatar Roku of the Fire Nation. So the next re-incarnation of the Avatar would be from the Water Tribes.
  • Avatar Day (1) An anti-Avatar holiday celebrated by a small village within the Earth Kingdom commemorating the murder of thier leader by past Avatar Kyoshi. Aang chose to stand trial for his past life's crime in hopes to prove his innocence and bring about peace in the Second Season episode "The Avatar Day"
  • Avatar Kyoshi (1) Nation: Earth (2) female, lived about 400 years ago according to the Season One episode "The Warriors of Kyoshi" and re-appeared in Second Season Episode "The Avatar Day" (2) the Avatar proceeding Avatar Roku (3) Now resides only in the Spirit World
  • Avatar Roku (1) Nation: Fire Nation (2) the Avatar directly before Aang, male (3) Now resides within the Spirit World but occasionally contacts Aang to give him advice or warning.
  • The Avatar State (1) a spiritual state an Avatar enters in order to tap into the awesome power of his past lives. (2) In the Avatar State, the Avatar is his most powerful but is also his most weakest. If the Avatar is killed while in this spiritual state, the Avatar Cycle will cease to exist. (3) Aang is currently trying to master his Avatar State (being able to enter and leave the Avatar state voluntarily, and being able to control the power once he's in this Spiritual State)
  • Azula: (1) Nation: Fire (2) Princess of the Fire Nation, female, 15 years old (2) Daughter of Firelord Ozai and Ursa, younger sister of Prince Zuko (3) abilities: Firebender, Lightening Bender (4) Name meaning: "blue" with a feminine ending (5) Named after her grandfather Firelord Azulon
  • Azulon (1) Nation: Fire (2) Past Firelord of the Fire Nation (3) Father of current Firlord Oazi and Iroh; Grandfather of Prince Zuko and Princess Azula and Iroh's deceased son Lu Ten (3) Princess Azula was named after him
  • Badger-Mole (1) Giant blind hybrid of a badger and mole. (2) Ancient earthbending creatures who taught the first Avatar humans Oma and Shu how to Earthbend giving birth to the Earthbending culture. (3) Though fierce creatures they can be lulled by music
  • Ba Sing Se: (1) Earth Kingdom capital and last strong-hold against the Fire Nation invasion (2) Ruled by the Earth King (3) Name meaning :"un-impenetrable city" as quoted by one of the Earth Kingdom generals in the Avatar episode "The Drill"/aka "The City of Walls and Secrets"
  • Bato(1) Nation: Water (2) Southern Water Tribe, male (3) Warrior and friend of the Sokka & Katara's father Hakoda (4) Appeared in First Season episode "Bato of the Water Tribe" and reappears in the Second Season.
  • Boomerang (1) Sokka's primary weapon of choice, a curved intruments that can knock an opponent upside the head or slice through vines in the trees and return back to him (2) The boomerang is a prized possession of Sokka. It was given to him by his father Hakoda and Sokka was devastated when he temporarily lost it in the Second Season episode "The Avatar Day"
  • "The Boomer-Aang Gang" (1) Sokka's attempt at a team name for the gang which Katara voted down
  • Bumi(1) Nation: Earth (2) The King of the Earth Kingdom city of Omashu (which was later captured by the Fire Nation and rename New Ozai), male (3) Once a childhood friend, Aang reunites with the much older King in the First Season episode "The King of Omoshu" and later in the Second Season episode "Return to Omashu" (4) abilities: powerful Earthbender (2) Name meaning: Earth
  • Bosco (1) The Earth King's pet bear
  • The Blue Spirit (1) Prince Zuko's masked secret identity who first appeared in First Season episode "The Blue Spirit" and made several more re-appearance in the Second Season.
  • Cabbage Merchant (1) Nation: Earth (2) An unlucky vendor of cabbages who always seems to run into Aang and the others whenever they're in trouble... and ends up getting his cabbages destroyed. He was first seen in Omashu and last seen in Ba Sing Se. (According to Wikipedia, his name is Chou)
  • Cactus juice (1) A drink from a cactus in the desert. BEWARE OF IT! It has "mystical" powers that make the drinker abnormally hyper and a false picture of the world around their own self. Causes hallucination for a long period of time. (2) Sokka unfortunately discovered this out for himself and spent the better part of the day wandering the desert worshipping a giant mushroom in the episode "The Desert"
  • Celestial Avatar Spirit Aang (1) This colossal figure represents Aang's mastery of the Avatar State. Aang encounters this giant version of himself in space during his meditation on the seventh chakra (pure cosmic energy.) The first time he meditates, (in 2.19 "The Guru") Aang has a vision of Katara in trouble and has to abandon his celestial twin. The second time he meditates, (in 2.20 "The Crossroads of Destiny") Aang is interrupted when Azula shoots him in the back with lightning. In both cases, Aang is unable to clear the chakra and master the Avatar State.(Nick.com) 
  • Chong (1) Nation: Earth (2) Male leader of a group of wandering musical hippies the Aang and the gang encountered in the Second Season episode Cave of Two Lovers, other two musicians traveling with him were Lily (female) and Moku (male)
  • Crazy Foaming Mouth Guy (1) Nation Earth (2) Crazy psychotic guy on Kyoshi Island that's an Avatar fanboy
  • Crystal Armor (1) "Aang creates a protective suit of crystal to protect himself from Azula's vicious attacks during the battle in the crystal catacombs. This Earthbending move is great for defense, especially against fire. It's not as effective for offensive moves, since it limits the practitioner's range of motion. Aang also creates a Crystal cocoon to protect himself from Azula and Zuko. Inside the cocoon, Aang meditates and enters the Avatar State."(Nick.com)
  • Dai Li  (1) Nation: Earth (2) group of elite Earthbenders formed to "protect" the cultrual heritage of the Earth Kingdom capital of Ba Sing Se but act more like secret police to "control" the inhabitants of the city and keep order through unhanded means such as brainwashing trouble makers. (3) Leader of the Dai Li is Long Feng. 
  • Earthbender: (1) an individual of the Earth Kingdom with the able to manipulate the elements of earth into sand and various forms of rock for offense and defense purposes. (2) Subdivisions of Earthbenders: Sandbender and Metalbender (metalbending is estremely rare however!) (3) Known earthbenders: King Bumi, Toph, Long Feng and the Dai Li agents, Haru and his father Tyro, the Avatar/Aang, the generals of Ba Sing Se,
  • The Earth King (1) Nation: Earth (2) King of Ba Sing Se (3) nickname EKKY (4) Per Nick.com: "The current Earth King (the fifty-second in his royal line) was once called Kuei, but after coronation the Earth Kings traditionally renounce any personal name, thereafter referred to only by their title or "Your Majesty", and are considered by their subjects as almost god-like in stature."
  • Earth Kingdom: (1) the largest and most deverse kingdom of the four Avatar Nations currently trying to defend itself from the advancement of the Fire Nation. (2) The Earth Kingdom is rich in raw materials like coal and other ores which the Fire Nation needs to make and run thier machines. (3) Known cities menitoned in the Earth Kingdom: The two great cities: Omashu and Ba Sing Se.
  • Earth Wave (1) "A high level Earthbending move that uses the earth itself as a mode of transportation over long distances. It takes a lot of energy to produce, so you better hope you don't run into any Firebenders along the way! Toph creates an Earthwave to travel back to Ba Sing Se after escaping from Xin Fu and Master Yu." (Nick.com)
  • Eastern Air Temple (1) Air Nomad Temple long deserted but once home to the baby flying bisons (2) /Aang chose Appa, his creature campagnion from this temple (3) It is here Aang returned in the Second Season to meet Guru Pathik who was to help him master the Avatar State.
  • Elephant Koi (1) Giant Koi fish living off the coastline of the island of Kyoshi and considered a primary food source for the giant Unagi eel.
  • EKKY (1) slang for The Earth King
  • Firebender: (1) an individual of the Fire Nation capable of creating fire from thought and projecting the fire as a weapon in the form of fire blasts, fire daggers and fire whips. (2) A few rare firebenders (like Azula and Iroh) can also bend lightening. (3) Firbenders are strongest at high noon and during the summer soltice, but will gain even more strength when Sozin's comet returns making them nearly unstoppable. (4) Firebenders loose thier bending ability during a solar eclipse. (5) Known firebenders: Firelord Ozai, Iroh, Prince Zuko, Princess Azula, Master Jeong-Jeong, Avatar Roku, Aang (once briefly)
  • Fire Nation: (1) one of the Four Avatar Nations within the Avatar world (2) though small in size in comparrison to the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nations is the strongest of the four nations currently on a campaign towards world domination. They consider themselves to be the strongest and most superior of all the Nations. (3) located in the Southern most region of the Avatar World close to the Southern Water Tribe and Southern Air Temple. (4) Fire Nation is ruled by the Firelord (current Firelord is Ozai)
  • Fire Nation Trebuchet(1) These catapults are used by the Fire Nation to conduct long-range warfare. Manned by imposing, muscle-bound Trebuchet Operators and capable of launching flaming munitions over great distance, these weapons have become the scourge of city walls throughout the world of Avatar.(Nick.com)
  • Foofoocuddelypoops (1) nickname Sokka gave to the baby sabertoothed-moose-lion cub he encounterd and got stuck in a hole over in the Avatar episode "Bitter Work"
  • Gaang(1) slang for the nickname for the foursome that is derived from Aangs name
  • Guru Pathik (1) Spiritual master who offered to teach Aang how to control the Avatar State, male, very old (2) Once a personal friend of Aang's master and guardian Monk Gyatso.  
  • Gyatso(1)Nation: Air (2) Aang's Master Airbending teacher and guardian killed 100 years ago by the Fire Nation, male (3) Appeared in flashback memory in the First Season episode "The Southern Air Temple" 
  • Iroh (1) Nation: Fire Nation (2) Uncle of Prince Zuko and Princess Azula, son of past Firelord Azulon, eldest brother to current Firelord Ozai (3) Retired General of the Fire Nation traveling with his banished nephew Prince Zuko (4) aka "The Dragon of the West" a nickname given to him during his years in the Fire Nation army. (5) abilities: Fire and Lightening Bender (6) Passions: Jasmine tea, good food and music and giving out advice.
  • Hakoda(1) Nation: Water (2) Leader of the Souther Water Tribe (3) father to Sokka & Katara who left the Southern Water tribe two years ago with his warriors to help the Earth Kingdom defend against the Fire Nation (4) Sokka was able to re-unite with Hakada in the Second Season episode "The Guru"
  • Haru (1) Nation: Earth (2) young Earthbender who appeared in the First Season episode "Imprisioned" (3) son of Tyro, (the leader of his village who was imprisoned for five years aboard a Fire Nation off shore coal mining rig)
  • Hei Bai (1) Spirit World creature who exists in two forms a Gentle Gian Panda Bear and a Black and White beast who is the Spirit of the Forest (2) Name literally means, Black White
  • Hu Tou Gou (1) Tiger Head Hooks) (1a pair of metal hooked weapons used by Jet, leader of the Freedom Fighters.
  • Jeko (1) slang for the relationship between Freedom Fighter Leader Jet and Prince Zuko
  • Jeong-Jeong (1) Nation: Fire (2) Master Firebender but now a wanted fugative of the Fire Nation, male (3) Though reluctant, first to teach Aang to firebend
  • Jet (1) Nation: Earth (2) Leader of a band of rebel Freedom Fighters against the Fire Nation, male in his late teens close to Zuko's age perhaps(?) (3) Parents were killed when Jet was eight in a Fire Nation raid. (4) Appeared first in First Season episode "Jet" with re-occuring appearances late in the Second Season.
  • Jun (June) (1) mercenary female bounty hunter once hired by Prince Zuko to track the Avatar and fancied by Iroh who appeared in the First Season episode "Bato of the Water Tribe"
  • Joo Dee (1) the brainwashed liason the Dai Li sent to keep tabs on the Avatar and his friends during thier stay in Ba Sing Se
  • Kanna (1) Nation: Water (2) Katara & Sokka's grandmother, originally from the Northern Water Tribe but migrated to the Southern Tribe in her youth
  • Kataang (1) slang for the romatic pairing of Katara with Aang
  • Katara (1) Nation: Water (2) Southern Water Tribe, female, 14 years old (3) younger sister of Sokka ; daughter of Hakoda; granddaughter of Kanna (4) abilities: Waterbender (5) travels and is friends with Aang (Aang's love interest)
  • Kuei (1) Nation: Earth (2) The given name for the Earth King of Ba Sing Se
  • Kyoshi Island (1) a small island in the Earth Kingdom named after past Avatar Kyoshi (2) protected by a band of female warriors called the Kyoshi Warriors (3) Once part of the mainland until Avatar Kyoshi seperated it in order to protect her people from being conquered by an evil Earth Kingdom Lord.
  • La (1) The Moon Spirit who took the mortal form of a white koi fish (2) La is paired with Tui (The Water Spirit/mortal form=black koi fish) in a Yin and Yang, "push and pull" relationship. La is the Yang ("pull")and Tui is the Yin ("push") (3) The Moon Spirit gives the Waterbenders the thier ability to bend and in Chinese means to "pull"(4) Princess Yue later become the Moon Spirit after sacrificing herself to give the Moon Spirit back its life after Zhoa killed its mortal form int he Siege of the North episode
  • Lake Laogai (1) a large lake within the walls of the Earth Kingdom city of Ba Sing Se (2) Beneath the lake is the secret headquarters of the Dai Li agency where uncooperative citizens or trouble makers are brought to be brainwashed.
  • Large Earth Coins (1) These people-sized round coins are used as weapons by Earthbenders. Because they are made out of Earth, Earthbenders are able to bend them, spinning and rolling them at their opponents. Inspired from actual Earth Kingdom coins these weapons are very useful on the battlefield. The coins can be lined up side by side to make a defensive (and mobile) wall or stacked to make an impromptu lookout tower. Skilled Earthbenders can use these coins as a vehicle and "ride" in the hole in the middle of the coins.(Nick.com)
  • Long Feng (1) Nation: Earth (2)Leader of the Dai Li (an elite agency of earthbenders who "control" Ba Sing Se,  male (2) Name meaing: Long ="dragon" and Feng = "maple" or "pheonix"
  • Long Shot (1) Nation: Earth (2) male teen (3) member of Jet's Freedom Fighters (4) abilities: expert archer (5) thought mute at first but final did speak in the second season. (5) First appeared in the First Season episode "Jet" with re-appearance in episodes late in the Second Season.
  • Lightening Bender (1) a rare firebender who has the added ability to seperate energy and reconnect it in the form of a lightening bolt. (2) Known lightening benders: Iroh and Princess Azula
  • Lu Ten (1) Nation: Fire (2) Long deceased son of Iroh who only appears in Iroh's flashback memory and a drawing (3) Killed during the first siege of the Earth Kingdom city of Ba Sing Se when Iroh was the commanding General (4) First cousin (older) to Prince Zuko and Princess Azula
  • Mai (1) Nation: Fire (2) daughter of the governor of New Ozai(formally the Earth Kingdom city of Omashu), 15 years old (4) childhood friend and classmate of Princess Azula (both attended the Fire Nation Academy for Girls) (3) abilities: non-bender, but experienced in the use of stilettos (spring loaded daggers) (4) Princess Azula has enlisted her talents, along with another friend TyLee, to help capture her brother, uncle and the Avatar in the Second Season.
  • Master Pakku (1) Nation: Water (2) Northern Water Tribe Master Waterbender, older male (3) Aang and Katara's Waterbending teacher once they reached the Northern Water Tribe at the end of the First Season. (3) Revealed later he was once bretrothed to Katara's grandmother Kanna.
  • Momo: (1) Aang's Pet flying lemur (2) Name meaning: Japanese for "peach"
  • Mongoose Dragon: This is an hybrid animal typical of the Avatar world -- it is a cross between a mongoose and a basilisk lizard -- only bigger. The Mongoose Dragons are large animals that are basically ridden like a horse only Mongoose Dragons are much more versatile. Their quick, mongoose-like reflexes help them to dodge just about any attack, and their lizard-like abilities enable them to quickly crawl over just about any obstacle even up walls. Riding this animal takes a little getting used to especially when it stands on its hind legs, but it is well worth it. These animals are originally from the tropical jungles of the Fire Nation.(source: Nick.com)
  • Nothern Air Temple (1) Air Nomad Temple long deserted by the nomads but reclaimed by a group of refugees lead by the Mechanist (an inventer) and his paralyzed son Teo. The refugees discovered the Air Nomad's gliders and brought them back to life.
  • Omashu (1) Earth Kingdom city ruled by King Bumi which Aang and his friends visited early in the first season in the epidose "The King of Omashu" (2) Omashu was later captured by the Fire Nation and renamed New Ozai by Princess Azula in tribute to her father the current Firelord (3) Origin: named after the first two Earthbenders Oma & Shu who were taught to earthbend by the giant badger moles
  • Onion-Banana Juice-This is one of Guru Pathik's favorite drinks. Mixed with the juice of an onion and the juice of a banana, this drink is as terrible as it sounds. But still there are many people that love it -- they might tell you that it's an acquired taste. This is something people drink while cleansing their chakras -- supposedly, it helps the cleansing process. An unusual fact about this drink is it makes your burps taste like pickles.(Nick.com)  
  • Ozai (1) Nation: Fire (2) the current Firelord Aang must defeat before Sozin's Comet arrives at the end of the summer. (3) Son of past Firelord Azulon; younger brother of Iroh; father of banished/fugative Prince Zuko and Princess Azula
  • Pentapus (1) a squid-starfish like little creature that likes to live in the sewers beneath the Earth Kingdom city of Omashu. Once they attach to a victim, the only way to remove them is with a gentle rub to thier back.
  • Pentapox (1) a made up disease for the suction marks made on the skin by the pentapus Sokka thought up to get the refugess out of Omashu
  • Platypus-Bear (1) giant hybrid of a grizzly bear and a platypus with the body of a bear, a duck billed face and beaver like tail. It lays very large eggs instead of giving live birth and is usually quite grumpy and best to be avoided.
  • Rock Gloves-(1) The favored weapons of the Dai Li. Agents wear the rock gloves on their hands and can use them in battle by Earthbending them like a stone punch at an opponent standing across the room, using them to snatch someone from behind without getting close enough to be detected, or locking them like cuffs around a person's wrists or ankles. Agents can also use their bending to bond them with stone walls, allowing them to climb up like spiders. (Nick.com)
  • Sabertoothed-Moose-Lion (1) a large ferocious beast that has the body of a lion, the antlers of a moose and the long fangs of a sabertooth cat / this animal is fiercely protective of its young
  • Sage(s) (1)guardian(s) of the Avatar temples whose first duty was a loyalty to the Avatar (2) The Fire Nation Sages (except for one) however became loyal to the Fire Nation after Avatar Roku disappeared and the new Avatar (Aang) did not reappear.
  • Sandbender: (1) a type of Earthbender who has adapted himself to living in desert sand regions within the Earth Kingdom
  • Serpent's Pass (1) a narrow and dangerous ridge trail cutting across the lake leading to the great Earth Kingdom city of Ba Sing Se. Besides the dangers found along the trail, the water below is the home to a fierce sea serpent and is patrolled by the Fire Nation.
  • Sifu (1) In Chinese literally means "master". (2) Master bending teachers are often called a Sifu like Aang referred to Toph and Katara as Sifu Toph and Sifu Katara
  • Smellerbee (1) young female member of Jet's Freedom Fighters first appearing in First Season episode "Jet" and again in the Second Season
  • Sokka (1) Nation: Water (2) Southern Water Tribe (3) older brother to Katara: son of Hakoda; grandson of Kanna, male 15 (4) travels with his sister and Aang. (5) abilities: non-bender but an expert with a boomerang and other weapons (6) considered the "Idea Guy" for the gang (6) passions: meat and sarcasm.
  • Southern Air Temple (1) Air Nomad Temple located in the Southern Region of the Avatar World not far far from the Fire Nation (2) Aang's home base where he was raised by the monks (3) First temple to be attacked and distroyed by the Fire Nation.
  • Sozin (1) Nation: Fire (2) past Firelord who started the original100 year war for world domination in the Avatar world and who the comet due to arrive by summer's end is named after  (3) Father of Azulon; grandfather of Ozai and Iroh, great-grandfather of Zuko and Azula
  • Sozin's Comet (1) an approaching comet which will reach the Avatar world at the end of the Summer giving the Fire Nation even more power, power which the Fire Nation hopes to use to distroy the last strongholds in the Earth Kingdom. Aang must defeat Firelord Ozai before the comet arrives. (2) Comet named after Firelord Oazi's grandfather, Firelord Sozin.
  • Spirit Library (1) a magnificient library created in the the Earth Kingdom desert by the Spirit Owl, Wan Shi Tong, for the purpose of collecting knowlege.
  • Spirit Water (1) Contained inside Katara's amulet is water from the Northern Water Tribe's Spirit Oasis. Master Pakku gave Katara this water in episode 2.01, when they parted ways. Katara doesn't know exactly what the spirit water does, but she does know it has "special properties." She thinks it could possibly cure Zuko's scar, but she'll never know for sure since she had to use the water to save Aang's life instead. (Nick.com)
  • Stilettos (1)Mai's main weapons of choice are stilettos, tiny daggers that are spring-loaded on Mai's arms and legs. She can throw these stilettos over far distances, which make them a deadly, long-range weapon (Nick.com) 
  • Suki (1) Nation: Earth (2) Leader of a band of female warriors from the island of Kyoshi the gang first met in the First Season episode "The Warriors of Kyoshi Island" and makes a re-appearanced in the Second Season.
  • Sukka (1) slang for romantic pairing of Suki, the Kyoshi Warrior leader and Sokka
  • Sungi Horn (1) the brass horn Iroh obtained in the market place in the episode the "Waterbending Scroll" and played/was the background music in the episode "The Blue Spirit"

  • Tangle Mines-Invented by Sokka's father, Hakoda, tangle mines are made with a bamboo frame and covered with dried animal skin. Inside, the mine is filled with stinkfish and seaweed. These mines float in the water and detonate when a ship hits them. When the mines detonate, they explode seaweed and stinkfish. The seaweed tangles around the propeller of the ship, incapacitating it. Meanwhile, the smell from the stinkfish forces people to abandon ship. Though they are a very unusual mine, they are very effective. Hakoda calls them the stink 'n sink "It's destructive, buoyant, and terrible smelling." (Nick.com)

  • Tui (1) the Ocean Spirit who took the mortal form of a black koi fish. (2) It is said the Ocean Spirit gave the Water Tribe life (3) literally mean "push" in chinese and this spirit is paired with the Moon Spirit (La) in a Yin and Yang balance (Tui is the Yin and La is the Yang)
  • Turtleduck (1) cute little creature which is a combination of a duck with the hard shell of the turtle first seen in the Avatar episode "Zuko Alone"
  • TyLee (1) Nation: Fire (2) 14 years old, female, childhood/school friend of Princess Azula whom Azula enlisted, (along with Mai), to help her capture the Avatar. (3) abilities: non-bender, but an extemely agile acrobat with the ability to paralyze and temporarily take away a bender's ability to bend using targeted pressure points.
  • Tyro (1) Nation: Earth (2) Earthbender & Leader of his village imprisioned for five years by the Fire Nation seen in the episode "Imprisioned" (3) father of young earthbender Haru
  • Ursa (1) Nation: Fire (2) wife of Ozai and mother of Prince Zuko and Princess Azula (3) Appears in flashback memory in first season episode "Zuko Alone" where she disappears from Zuko's life under suspicious circumstances when he was about eight (2) Name meaning "bear" (connecting with motherly instincts no doubt)
  • Unagi (1) Giant sea eel living in the waters off Kyoshi Island (2) favorite food of the Unagi: giant elephant kio fish
  • Wan Shi Tong (1) a giant Spirit Owl and creator of the Spirit Library found buried in the Earth Kingdom desert
  • Waterbender: (1) an individual of the Water Tribe with the ability to manipulate water in it's various forms as a solid, liquid or vapor. (2) Waterbenders are strongest at night but particularly during a full moon but can loose thier ability to bend during a lunar eclipse. (3) Known Waterbenders: Katara, Master Pakku, the Avatar/Aang.
  • Water Tribe: (1) One of the four nations within the Avatar world (2) Composed of two major cultural tribes the Southern Water Tribe (where Katara and Sokka are from) and the Northern Water Tribe (where Aang found Waterbending Master Pakku to help him learn waterbending)
  • Yue: (1) Nation: Water (2) Princess & Daughter of Nothern Water Tribe Leader (3) Became the "Moon Spirit" (4) Name meaning: Maderin Chineese for "moon"
  • Yuyan Archer (1) Feared archers of the awesome Fire Nation can pin a fly from 100 yards out without killing it (2) Chinese for "jade eye".
